Binghamton raced out to a 15-2 advantage. UMBC countered with a 19-6 run of their own to tie it up at 21. By halftime UMBC held a 31-27 lead despite shooting 2-9 from the free throw line.
In the second half UMBC retained control of the lead. Binghamton forward Gavin Walsh who entered the day seventh in the country in rebounds and second in defensive rebounds finished the game with 13 points and as many rebounds for the Bearcats.
Binghamton made things interesting as they began to show urgency and closed the gap in the final couple of minutes. However, the Bearcats kept trading layups for Retriever free throws. UMBC withstood the Binghamton comeback and prevailed 81-77.
Up next for the Retrievers they travel to league leader Bryant. Binghamton continues their road trip with a game on Saturday at NJIT in Newark New Jersey.
