2022-23 CBI Bracketology #4 1-31-23
By: Ethan Henessy
We are at the halfway point of the conference season. With about a month left until conference tournaments the CBI field is starting to take shape. I expect the CBI to field a stronger collection of teams this year due to my announcement in last week’s bracketology that CollegeInsider will not be running their postseason tournament “The Basketball Classic” in the 2022-23 season. With 363 teams in division one there will still be dozens of deserving quality teams that don’t make the NCAA Tournament or NIT, but this year there will only be 16 postseason slots beyond the NIT. The good news for fans is that this should make for a competitive tournament down in Daytona Beach. Here is how I see the field looking on the final day of January:
College Basketball Invitational (16 Teams Daytona Beach Florida)
- Air Force (12-10 Mountain West)
- Appalachian State (13-10 Sun Belt)
- Bryant (13-8 America East)
- Longwood (15-8 Big South)
- Mississippi State (13-8 SEC)
- Norfolk State (15-7 MEAC)
- North Alabama (13-10 ASUN)
- Queens (15-8 ASUN)
- Sacramento State (12-10 Big Sky)
- Saint Thomas (14-10 Summit)
- San Jose State (13-9 Mountain West)
- Southern Indiana (13-10 OVC)
- Southern Utah (15-7 WAC)
- Tarleton State (12-10 WAC)
- Toledo (15-6 MAC)
- UAB (15-7 CUSA)
Yearly breakdown
2022: 97% (36/37) Perfect CBI
2021: 100% (8/8) Perfect CBI
*2020: 88% minimum *It was later determined three days from Selection Sunday (at the time of the cancelations) I had already correctly predicted 37 of the would-be 42 teams confirmed in the fields.
2019: 93% (39/42)
2018: 75% (27/36)
