By: Ethan Hennessy

The College Basketball Invitational picture is coming into focus on the Tuesday before Selection Sunday. Here is how I see the field looking on March 7th.

College Basketball Invitational (16 Teams Daytona Beach Florida)

  • Ball State (20-11 MAC)
  • Indiana State (22-12 MVC)
  • Marshall (24-8 Sun Belt)
  • Merrimack (17-16 NEC)
  • Milwaukee (21-11 Horizon)
  • Montana State (23-9 Big Sky)
  • North Alabama (18-14 ASUN)
  • Samford (21-11 SoCon)
  • Sam Houston State (24-6 WAC)
  • San Francisco (20-14 WCC)
  • San Jose State (19-12 Mountain West)
  • Southern Indiana (16-16 OVC)
  • Southern Utah (20-11 WAC)
  • Stetson (17-13 ASUN)
  • Towson (21-12 CAA)
  • Washington State (16-15 Pac 12)

Yearly Breakdown

2022: 97% (36/37) Perfect CBI

2021: 100% (8/8) Perfect CBI

*2020: 88% minimum *It was later determined three days from Selection Sunday (at the time of the cancelations) I had already correctly predicted 37 of the would-be 42 teams confirmed in the fields.

2019: 93% (39/42)

2018: 75% (27/36)

If you have any information regarding a team and the CBI you can email me anonymously at happeninghoops@gmail.com or direct message me on twitter @HappeningHoops

  1. Peter H says:

What happened to Detroit Mercy? Have you changed your mind, or have you learned it isn’t going to happen?

  2. Gary Jason Good says:

With the CBI now being only a four day event all in one venue and there no longer being a best of three final…

    1. Have you heard talk of, or what would you think of, the tournament being a three or four game guarantee tournament? Since the teams and fanbases have to be prepared to be there for four days anyway, why not have a losers bracket, 5th place, 7th place games, etc…?

    2. I know the CBI likes Daytona but could you see it’s location move around from time to time? Seems it would become less desirable for some programs if they keep going to the the same venue something like 4 out of 6 years.

    3. What happened to The Basketball Classic this year?

    4. What has to happen for the CBI to become more acceptable for more programs/ to become closer in perception to the NIT?

  3. Everett Will says:

Southern Indiana, Western Carolina and Milwaukee are all now official to the CBI, FWIW.

  4. Mark says:

Radford and Eastern Kentucky are in too.

  5. Mark says:

I haven’t yet been able to confirm Milwaukee.
